God, just stop

Location: Danny and Joe's dorm room
Is this perhaps my second-most-satisfying final-panel punch?
The story hasn’t even explained yet why exactly this is happening but I don’t think anybody cares.
Was it as satisfying back then as it is now?
Justice Punch!
I’ll admit, first time I read this, this comic super-confused me. “Why the hell is Ruth punching Danny? That makes no sense!” I thought.
Not sure whether that says more about the comic, or me.
At the point where I was when I read, I saw it as Danny just being polite. I honestly never considered him to seem as if he were leading Joyce on. Then again, I actually saw him saying no in a dozen or so times, then again he did comfort her in her fear, then again he did make it pretty clear he wasn’t interested, then again he did pretend to be her fiancé, then again she is crazy….
Yeah.
Being nice should not be considered “leading on” – it should not be Danny’s job to be anything but himself to convince Joyce that he isn’t interested. This has happened to me. I don’t like to hurt people, and I tend to be nice to people, whether I like them or not. This does not mean that when I say “I am not interested in you romantically” it’s okay to ignore that and assume I’m just being hard to get. No means no.
This. Exactly. This is my first time reading this, so I don’t know what’s coming up, but if that’s Ruth’s justification for punching Danny, I’ll be rather disappointed.
Yes. Because “being nice to people” doesn’t equal “flirting”. I have been there many times…
That was pretty much my reaction as well.
I am scared (oddly satisfied) and confused. And I’ve read this before.
HOORAY FOR FACE PUNCHES!
… Should I submit this one to the Crowning Moment of Face Punch tumblr yet, or should we wait a day or two?
I’d recommend waiting, so we can get the official explanation and immediate consequences.
Both of which are readily available, y’know, on the other site.
Should I spoil it for everyone, seeing as I know it off the top of my head, HAIL WALKYPEDIA I KNOW ALL, etc.?
I’m lazy and the original site is a horrifying nightmare zone from which none can escape.
Because punching JOYCE means she’d cry, and that’s no fun. At least Danny, he’ll whine but then you get to yell that he deserves it.
Even if we don’t know why.
I think they could both benefit from a good punchin’.
Considering that Danny has no interest in Joyce but she’s figuratively and literally stalking him, I’m not going to side with Ruth here. Being nice to her hasn’t worked and even being mean to her only lasted a short time. Indifference is all he has left.
OK, it’s satisfying to see Danny getting punched, but I have to ask why? I mean, danny is actually being reasonable here for once, and has made it pretty clear to joyce several times he’s not interested.
but he gets punched why?
Pretty sure Ruth just likes punching people. Sure she’ll have some “explanation” but really nothing here deserved punching, she just Wanted to.
Yeah I’m sorry Willis but Ruth’s explanation never made any sense to me.
I love how Ruth punches in a directly straight line, with a perfectly straight back.
No body motion or swing and yet she still has lots of force. Remarkable.
Some people tell deadpan jokes. It appears Ruth uses deadpan punches? (Boy did that make a lot more sense in my mind).
But the punch makes me laugh because it seems so “I don’t have time to bother with moving but you need to be punched.”
She’s a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Ruthbot!
batteries not included
I don’t remember exactly what Ruth’s explanation is, but I do remember that when I read through the archives, this strip didn’t seem as odd when I could click to the next one and there was more explanation. The “out of nowhere” punch is certainly a little more out of nowhere when I have to wait.
For a minute there I thought she punched Joyce and I was all “FINALLY!” but then I realised it was Danny and now I’m all ‘What?”
This one is a close third: http://www.dumbingofage.com/2011/comic/book-1/06-yesterday-was-thursday/smash/
I think that one, while awesome, is disqualified on technical grounds. I don’t think face-glassing someone actually counts as a punch.
quite
I thought she was trying to punch Joyce and hit Danny by accident.
Wait, why is she punching him? She’s aware that JOYCE is the stalker and HE wants nothing to do with her, right?
I think Ruth’s life must be a little like Takeshi No Chousenjou (AKA Takeshi’s Challenge for the Famicom): punch everybody, use the “speak harshly” option on the menu, and… well, without speculating about spoilers, let’s just say it’s really hard to win that game, eh?
Maybe in DoA, she’ll quit her job as an R.A., get good at one specific karaoke song, submerge a treasure map in water for exactly five minutes, learn to play the guitar, and hang glide past countless birds and UFOs without the ability to freely ascend, eventually finding the hidden treasure? And then the last page of DoA takes five minutes to load and consists of David Willis’ head telling the reader not to take it so seriously.
I care…I think Danny’s a swell fellow…imperfect but swell.
I think I’m hereby nominating your most recent shoryuken, in light of recent events.
